This album captures how it felt living in New York during covid, in particular the early, dark days of 2020.
She would gather with her husband, legendary saxophonist Grant Stewart, at the piano in their apartment to sing and play, finding classic repertoire that spoke to the complex emotions of the current moment. She then enlisted the help of pianist Michael Kanan, working closely to fine tune the set list and shape each song so it spoke unflinchingly to her idea. The result is an album that cuts to the core — music about a city emptying out and going quiet — a showcase for Yeghiazaryan’s all-world voice and storytelling ability, and an emotional experience not soon forgotten, whether you were there in New York or not.
